Why We Started This Course
As a practicing attorney, Augustus Corbett has represented many people charged with violating firearms laws. Most of these people were law-abiding citizens who simply didn’t know firearms law. That lack of knowledge cost them tens of thousands of dollars and often felony charges on their records with all the related aftermath.
“Weapons arrest rate are five times higher for blacks than for whites.” — DOJ
Paul, the dutiful father
Meet Paul. He had a teenage daughter. Her name is Suzy. Paul loved Suzy and would do anything for her. The problem was Suzi loved a young man who abused her. His name was Johnny Roughneck.
Once, Johnny had the nerve to attack Suzi at Paul’s house while Paul was home. Paul, like many Texans, had firearms at home. He grabbed one to protect Suzi from Mr. Roughneck. He didn’t fire it, nor did he point it at Mr. Roughneck. He merely brandished it to scare away Mr. Roughneck.
“Since 1995, blacks have been targeted in 34.6% of all hate crimes, despite being only 13.2% of the country population.”
The abusive and manipulative boyfriend
Mr. Roughneck knowing how to manipulate the legal system, called 911 and said Paul had assaulted him. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and arrested Paul, charging him with assault with a deadly weapon. This charge is a second-degree felony that carries up to 20 years in prison. Paul was facing up to 20 years for merely brandishing his gun to protect his daughter from her abuser.
Paul called Mr. Corbett for legal representation. Immediately, it was evident that the system got this wrong. Paul should not be facing a second-degree felony for protecting his daughter. Nor should he have had to pay $10,000 in legal fees plus have his criminal record stained with a felony charge.
The tough prosecutor
The prosecutor on the case was a jerk. She hated guns and anyone who owned them. She saw no use for firearms even when used for self-defense. The case was set for a needless trial. Fortunately, a much more reasonable prosecutor took over the case. Nevertheless, he had to cover himself and also made the case tough to resolve in Paul’s favor. After over a year helped by a good investigator, Mr. Corbett got the charge dismissed and expunged.
Paul is just one of many people who, because of ignorance of the law, get themselves in lots of expensive trouble. Mr. Corbett knew he had to help. The Armed And Informed Course was birth from his desire to save people from the turmoil of firearms charges.
Don’t let this happen to you. Take this course so you learn how to avoid the pitfalls of firearms law.
